Rising Star Penaia Cakobau Takes Flight with Fiji’s Rugby Elite!

Rising rugby star Penaia Cakobau has been selected to join the FIJI Water Flying Fijians as they aim to win back the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup. This is a significant moment for Cakobau, allowing him to fulfill his dream of donning the white jersey and competing alongside some of Fiji’s top rugby talent.

At 30 years old, Cakobau’s passion for rugby began at Queen Victoria School, where he was part of the team that claimed the prestigious Vodafone Under-18 Deans Trophy in 2011. Building a reputation locally, he pursued his rugby career internationally, playing in France and later for New Zealand’s North Harbor development team.

In 2018, Cakobau returned to Fiji, spending three years with Suva’s Skipper Cup team before returning to New Zealand at the end of 2022. Now, he is dedicated to further developing his skills as a professional athlete, hoping to secure a Super Rugby contract.

“When I received the call, I was both excited and it felt surreal,” Cakobau said. “At one point, I didn’t think I would get this opportunity, but now it’s a new benchmark for me. I need to work hard to maintain my place in this environment.”

As a member of the Flying Fijians, Cakobau will have the opportunity to learn from leading players such as Captain Tevita Ikanivere and Mesulame Dolokoto. He is stepping into a role previously occupied by Kavaia Tagivetaua and is determined to showcase his abilities on the field.

“Every rugby player has a list of things they want to accomplish,” Cakobau noted. “You write them down, motivate yourself, and train hard, especially when no one’s looking. Anything is possible if you’re willing to make the sacrifices.”
