Naibili Vatunisolo, a determined para-athlete from Balenabelo, Nadroga, is intensifying her preparations as the much-anticipated 2025 Pacific Mini Games approaches in Palau, scheduled for June 29. At 34, Vatunisolo is committed to achieving personal bests in the ambulant javelin, discus, and shot-put events, training rigorously five days a week under the guidance of her coach, Fred Fatiaki.

Reflecting on her training regimen, Vatunisolo noted, “The intensity has picked up,” as she focuses on refining her technique, particularly in javelin and shot put, along with increasing her lifting capacity at the gym. Her performance in training has been promising, with her javelin throws consistently exceeding 22 meters, setting her sights higher for the competition.

Despite the challenges posed by Suva’s unpredictable weather, where she has trained in rainy conditions, Vatunisolo remains resilient, viewing those obstacles as opportunities to adapt and maintain focus. She balances her athletic commitments with her education as a first-year student pursuing a Certificate in Front Office Operations at Fiji National University, showcasing her remarkable ability to manage both academics and sports.

Vatunisolo has made substantial contributions to Fiji’s para sports over nearly a decade, previously serving as the flag-bearer for Fiji at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where she won a bronze medal in discus. Her journey has been highlighted by accolades, including a new Oceania record set in shot put with a remarkable throw of 9.19 meters at the Paris Paralympic Games, demonstrating her resilience and dedication to the sport.

The anticipation surrounding the Pacific Mini Games presents a significant opportunity for Vatunisolo to showcase her talent. Her story is not only about athleticism; it embodies the power of perseverance, the importance of community support, and the pursuit of personal excellence. With a strong support network behind her, Vatunisolo’s journey continues to inspire many, as she aims to further her achievements in para-athletics while balancing her educational pursuits.
