Mosese Naura, a promising 22-year-old rugby rover from Navatusila in Navosa, showcased his talents during a recent match for the Seattle Barbarians against the Fijian Drua 7s team. Naura scored twice, leading his team to a thrilling 14-all draw against the Super Rugby Pacific side. His remarkable agility was highlighted as he outpaced Drua’s Taniela Rakuro on the field to secure one of his tries.

Reflecting on the game, Naura expressed pride in his team’s performance, stating, “We did what we have been preparing for during the week and we executed some of it.” He credited his teammates for their collective effort, while acknowledging the valuable experience gained from competing against a higher-level team. “We’ve really learnt a lot from the Drua because they play at a level higher than us, that is Super Rugby,” he noted.

Naura’s passion for rugby is evident; he has been active in the local scene, having played for the DXC Barbarians 7s team and Nadi rugby in last year’s Skipper Cup. His commitment to the sport is driven by a desire to pursue a professional career, particularly after prioritizing rugby over continued education. Last year, Nadi coach Ilaitia Momo Seru recognized Naura’s work ethic and potential, indicating he is one to look out for in the future.

With aspirations of making it onto the Fiji 7s squad, Naura remarked, “I know I’m so close to it,” while remaining hopeful about the future. His playing style has drawn comparisons to current Fiji 7s player Joji Nasova, which bodes well for his prospects under the guidance of Fiji 7s head coach Osea Kolinisau.

This emerging talent is indicative of the robust pipeline of young athletes in Fiji’s rugby system, who are dedicated to refining their skills and making an impact on the international stage. Naura’s journey exemplifies the dreams of many young Fijian players who aspire to represent their country and follow in the footsteps of past and current rugby legends.
