Miriama Taletawa, a prominent weightlifter and the winner of the 2024 Fiji Sportswoman of the Year Award, has expressed her heartfelt gratitude to her coach, Henry Elder, dedicating her win to him. At just 19 years old, Taletawa attributes much of her success to Elder, who she describes not only as a coach for the Weightlifting Fiji team but also as a paternal figure who consistently motivates and supports the athletes.
In her own words, Taletawa stated, “I want to dedicate my award to my coach, Henry Elder. He has always motivated me and the team, always encouraging us and lifting us up. Even when we drop weights, he’ll just tap us on the back and cheer us on.” This recognition marks the second consecutive year she has received this honor, solidifying her exceptional journey in weightlifting.
Taletawa’s achievements include a bronze medal at the 2023 Oceania Under-23 Junior and Youth Championship in Samoa and a silver medal at last year’s Commonwealth Championship in Suva. She was also part of Team Fiji at the recent Pacific Games, showcasing her dedication to the sport despite the challenges faced along the way.
The success of Taletawa and her team reflects not only individual talent but also the support systems in place, including Elder’s coaching methods that extend beyond weightlifting, offering life lessons and personal growth. These factors highlight the potential within Fiji’s sports community as they continue to rise on international platforms.
The recent Fiji Sports Awards have served as a beacon of inspiration, emphasizing that dedication and hard work can lead to remarkable achievements. With the support of their community, both Taletawa and Elder are paving the way for a hopeful future in weightlifting, which could see even more athletes excelling in their fields.
