A young talent from Dreketi, Jone Draunimasi, is setting an inspiring example by demonstrating that raw talent and relentless ambition can create opportunities that formal education sometimes cannot provide. After leaving school in Year 8, Draunimasi has earned a spot in the Fiji National Rugby League Under 18 extended squad, having caught the attention of national coach Wise Kativerata during a recent talent scouting mission in Vanua Levu.
Kativerata, recognized for his ability to spot emerging talent, identified Draunimasi as one of the most promising young athletes in the northern part of Fiji. Eager to prove himself, Draunimasi expressed his determination to seize this opportunity upon learning of the coach’s visit. “When I heard the coach was coming to Vanua Levu, I made sure to attend his session, and after the talks, they let me know I had made the squad. Not only does this give me a chance to prove myself, but also to make my family proud,” he said.
Draunimasi credits his success to his upbringing and expresses gratitude towards his parents for their support, despite the early interruption of his formal education. Kativerata praised Draunimasi’s talent, referring to it as a gift, and shared his enthusiasm to see the young athlete flourish on the national stage moving forward.
As Draunimasi prepares to compete against the Tonga U18 team next Saturday at Churchill Park in Lautoka, he looks forward to showcasing his abilities. This match will serve as a prelude to the much-anticipated game between the Kaiviti Silktails and West Tigers, which will be broadcast live on FBC.
The hopeful narrative of Jone Draunimasi aligns with the broader context of Fijian rugby, where many young athletes like Draunimasi are emerging from humble beginnings to pursue professional sports careers. This trend reflects the growing support for grassroots rugby and the belief that passion combined with determination can open pathways for success.
The story of Jone Draunimasi stands as a testament to the power of perseverance and belief in oneself, encouraging young athletes across Fiji to chase their dreams despite obstacles.
