Gurneet Kaur, head girl of Waiqele Primary School, has made her family proud by achieving the top position in Year Eight. Hailing from Kawakawa Settlement, she excelled in her studies, scoring the highest marks both in her annual examination and the Fiji Eighth Year Examination (FEYE), where she attained a remarkable 526 out of 600.
At just 13 years old, Gurneet has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to her education, maintaining a top position in her class since Year One. Her determination is driven by her ambition to become the first doctor in her family, motivated by the challenging circumstances faced by her community when accessing medical care. Many in her settlement travel considerable distances to reach medical facilities like Labasa Hospital or the Nasea Health Centre.
“I studied day and late into the night, including weekends, because my aim is to become the first doctor in my family,” Gurneet shared. She expressed her desire to provide immediate medical care for her community and to help alleviate health concerns such as diabetes.
Grateful for the support of her parents and teachers, Gurneet aims to inspire others from rural backgrounds. She emphasizes that educational success is attainable for anyone, regardless of their school’s location, and believes in making a positive impact in her community.
