Gurneet Kaur, the head girl of Waiqele Primary School, has made her parents proud by being named the dux of Year Eight. Achieving the highest scores in both her school’s annual examination and the Fiji Eighth Year Examination (FEYE), Gurneet secured an impressive 526 marks out of a possible 600.
At just 13 years old, Gurneet hails from Kawakawa Settlement and is the youngest of three siblings. “I studied day and late into the night, including weekends,” she shared, expressing her ambition to become the first doctor in her family. She has consistently excelled in her studies, maintaining the top position in her class since Year One.
The inspiration behind her dream of becoming a doctor stems from observing members of her community traveling long distances for medical care. “I want to help my people by providing immediate medical care when needed and alleviate the fear of early death or losing body parts due to diabetes,” Gurneet explained. She credits her achievements to the unwavering support from her parents and teachers.
With her rural background, Gurneet hopes to inspire others by proving that excellence in education is possible regardless of the school one attends. Her story is a testament to determination and the potential for young people to make a significant impact in their communities.
This inspiring journey not only highlights Gurneet’s academic success but also her heartfelt desire to serve her community, offering hope and motivation to others who may share similar aspirations. It reminds us that education can open doors to better futures and that one individual can lead the way for others.
