Fiji Junior Vonu Under-17 forward, Makayla Sukhu, expresses her desire to follow in her mother’s footsteps in the Australian Football League (AFL). Her mother, Vilisi Sukhu, was a member of the inaugural women’s Fiji Vonu team in 2014, making a significant impact in the sport.
“I took up this sport mainly because of my mum’s representation of Fiji,” Makayla shared, emphasizing her love for AFL since childhood. She has recognized the importance of team bonding and endurance in this unique sport, which she describes as encompassing various skills. Makayla is eager to inspire her sister to take up AFL as well and hopes to see the sport flourish in Fiji.
“This sport is quite challenging at first, but with practice, it becomes more manageable,” she added. Encouraged by her mother to remain focused on her goals, Sukhu finds motivation in supporting her teammates.
In addition to AFL, Sukhu also made her mark in chess, securing the Women’s Candidate Master (WCM) title at the 45th World Chess Olympiad held in Budapest, Hungary, where she was the youngest member of the team, achieving a score of 3.5 out of 7 against competitors from 193 countries. She also plays netball for Suva Grammar School and the Lomaiviti club.
Balancing academics and sports can be challenging, but Sukhu believes participating in sports helps alleviate stress and provides a mental respite. She attributes her success both in AFL and chess to divine intervention and acknowledges the steadfast support from her parents, who are always in her corner.
This inspiring journey highlights the dedication of a young athlete striving to make her mark in sports while honoring her mother’s legacy. With determination and support, Sukhu is committed to achieving her dreams and promoting the growth of AFL in Fiji.
Overall, Sukhu’s achievements in both sports serve as a testament to resilience and passion, offering a hopeful perspective for the future of young athletes in her country.
