Prominent Wests Tigers five-eighth Losana Lutu is among eight players selected to represent the Fiji Bulikula in the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship. This announcement was made by Bulikula head coach Joe Rabele over the weekend.
“We traveled to Australia to scout talent and have chosen eight players,” Rabele mentioned, adding that Lutu is a standout halfback playing for the Wests Tigers.
Lutu, originally from Suva and a Campbelltown Junior, has quickly risen through the ranks of the Wests Tigers organization in recent years. Known for her strong running abilities, Lutu had a remarkable breakout season in 2022, leading New South Wales to a win in the Under-19s State of Origin and securing a championship title with the Wests Tigers in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership. She is contracted with the club until the end of the 2026 season.
Rabele indicated that the coaching staff is working on forming the best possible team ahead of their match against Cook Islands Moana on October 26 in Suva, which serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup.
“We have been monitoring the women’s games in the local league,” Rabele, who previously guided the Bati to the semi-finals of the 2008 Rugby League World Cup, stated. “Currently, I have several players in mind for the 35-player squad, but we need to obtain NRL approval for their eligibility.”
Rabele emphasized the necessity of enhancing the local competition’s standard. “This qualifier is crucial for us,” he noted.
He is focused on securing a spot in the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup, which requires a strategic approach for the qualifiers. “We have a strong team, but we are waiting for clearance from the NRL. I’ve also included several secondary school players from Lami Steelers in the mix for this qualifier,” he explained.
According to Rabele, around half of the 35-member squad will be made up of locally based players. He expressed disappointment that the Fiji Bulikula did not participate in last year’s World Cup but sees this year as an opportunity to better identify their talents.
“This year is advantageous as it allows us time to scout for players. The team we form will be a balanced mix,” he added.
