Young goalkeeper Ka’iulani Scott is preparing to make her senior debut for the Fiji Kulas at the OFC Women’s Nations Cup this Saturday, a significant moment she describes as a “surreal experience.” Scott, who has roots in both New Zealand and Fiji, has advanced from local school competitions in Ba to the international stage, showcasing her commitment and passion for football.

Scott’s journey into goalkeeping was inspired by her older brother, who also plays in the same position. She expressed her motivation to outperform him, stating, “I’ve always wanted to be better than him, so it was always a great challenge.” Her talent was recognized in 2023, leading to her participation in various development camps before stepping onto the national stage.

As she gears up for her debut, Scott is excited to have her family cheering her on from the stands. “It’s such a surreal experience, especially being the first person in my family to represent Fiji. I’m so excited — playing in front of them makes it extra special,” she said. The Fiji Kulas will begin their campaign against the Solomon Islands at 7 PM on Saturday at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

Scott’s inclusion in the team reflects a broader trend in the development of women’s football in Fiji. The recent training camps have been crucial for the team as they prepare not only for this tournament but also for future competitions, including the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 Oceania Qualifiers. The integration of international players signifies the expanding opportunities for female athletes in Fiji, promoting a positive growth trajectory for the sport in the region.

This milestone for Scott is not just a personal achievement but also a hopeful symbol for aspiring young female footballers in Fiji, illustrating the potential for success and recognition in women’s sports. As the Fiji Kulas embark on this journey, the team’s dedication and hard work pave the way for a brighter future in women’s football.
