Jared Ma’afu Levai, a 17-year-old year 12 student, realized his childhood dream by clinching the senior boys’ blue-ribbon title during the LDS Church College inter-house competition held at HFC Bank Stadium. Levai’s impressive performance in the 100 meters added a significant milestone to his athletic career.
“I have always wanted to win the blue ribbon since I was younger. It took a lot of hard work and sacrifices,” Levai commented, expressing his determination and dedication to the sport. Besides his victory in the 100m, Levai also participated in the triple jump and the 4x100m relay, showcasing his versatility as an athlete.
Last year, Levai represented his school at the Fiji Finals, competing in both the 100m and the relay event. His competitive spirit is evident as he mentioned, “I like tough competition,” and he aims to secure a medal in the upcoming zone competition, aspiring to meet the qualifying time of 10.9 seconds for the Pacific Mini Games. Currently, his best time stands at 11.17 seconds.
Levai trains rigorously with the Laucala Bay athletics club under the guidance of coach Bola Tafoou, dedicating six days each week to enhance his speed and endurance. “The support of my family and friends keeps pushing me to be better,” he shared, recognizing the importance of his support network.
In addition to athletics, Levai balances his passion for sports by representing his school in basketball, making strides in both sports as he pursues his dreams.
The LDS inter-house competition not only witnessed Levai’s achievements but also featured over 200 athletes from the school, demonstrating a vibrant sporting spirit and community involvement. Such events play a crucial role in fostering athletic talent in schools and highlight the importance of teamwork and personal development among students.
The atmosphere of encouragement and healthy competition resonates well with Levai’s journey, reflecting a broader positive trend in Fijian sports culture where young athletes are motivated to excel and support one another in their pursuits.
