In just 14 months, Setareki Turagacoke has quickly gained recognition in France’s rugby scene. The 18-year-old, a former student at Lelean Memorial School, not only made his debut in the Top 14 this year but also received his first Test cap representing the FIJI Water Flying Fijians. Turagacoke stepped in at the last minute to replace the injured lock Isoa Nasilasila.

Originating from Dakuinuku, Sawakasa, and with maternal ties to Naselai, Nuku, and Tailevu, Turagacoke showcased his skills as one of five try scorers in the Fijian team’s 33-19 victory over Spain at Valladolid’s José Zorrilla Stadium. The team, trailing 7-10 at halftime, turned the game around in the second half, with perseverance being key to their success.

Head coach Mick Byrne emphasized the importance of patience, urging his players to stick to their game plan after a challenging first half. Despite facing errors and frustrations, the team managed to secure four unanswered tries in the second half. Caleb Muntz played a crucial role, converting four of the five tries, with contributions from Sireli Maqala, Sam Matavesi, and team captain Waisea Nayacalevu.

Looking ahead, Fiji is set to face Ireland this Sunday at Aviva Stadium, Dublin, in their final Test match of the series. This meeting marks only the sixth time the two teams will clash in a Test match, and historically, Ireland has emerged victorious in all five prior encounters, including a 35-17 win in their last meeting during the 2022 Autumn Series.

Nayacalevu shared insights about the Spanish rugby team’s dynamic and physical style, highlighting the rigorous preparation undertaken by the Fijian squad to excel in the match.

This promising performance from Turagacoke and the Flying Fijians reflects the immense potential in young players rising through the ranks, showcasing their talent on the international stage while fostering a competitive spirit that is vital for future matches.

The anticipation for the upcoming clash against Ireland presents an opportunity for Fiji to break their losing streak against a formidable opponent. Fans remain hopeful that the team can leverage their recent successes and growth to deliver an impressive performance.
