At just 16 years old, Nikita Rouse is making a significant impact in the va’a community as she prepares to represent Fiji in the upcoming Pacific Mini Games in Palau. As the youngest member of the 22-strong Team Fiji paddling squad, Nikita has steadily carved out her spot in the competitive realm of outrigger canoeing.

Nikita’s introduction to paddling came three years ago with the Vuna Canoe Club, where she quickly excelled, participating in international tournaments earlier this year including Waka Ama and the Sydney Challenge 2025. Reflecting on her journey, she expressed her excitement for the upcoming competition, stating, “This is the first time I will be representing Fiji in the Pacific Mini Games. One challenge for me would be balancing paddling and my school work.”

Her diverse athletic background began with swimming during her early school years before transitioning to va’a, which she found to be her true passion. The challenge of juggling rigorous training with her academic commitments showcases her determination and discipline, traits echoed by fellow athletes like Iris Rae Fisher and Martha Samuela, who are also gearing up for the Mini Games. Both of them have shared similar experiences of balancing sports and studies while cultivating a spirit of resilience and camaraderie within the team.

The Pacific Mini Games, scheduled for June 29 to July 9, not only represent a personal milestone for Nikita and her peers but highlight the vibrant youth sports scene in Fiji, characterized by young, exceptional talent. As many of these emerging athletes rise to meet the challenges of competition, their stories reflect a collective hope and determination that inspires others in their communities, fostering ambition and pride in representing their nation on the international stage.

The dedication of these young athletes, coupled with supportive networks from their coaches and families, illustrates the potential for Fiji to shine brightly in the sporting arena. With their eyes set on international recognition, the stories of Nikita and her teammates convey a legacy that nurtures future generations, reinforcing the strength and spirit of Fiji’s athletic community.
