Emosi Nuku, a winger for Sports World Fiji’s Under-20 rugby team, is relishing the experience of defending their Oceania Rugby U20 Challenge title. At just 19 years old, the recent victory was particularly special for Nuku as it marked his first time representing his nation on international turf.

“It’s my first time to wear the jersey and win the tournament. It makes me happy, and my family is really proud of me,” Nuku expressed, highlighting the personal significance of this achievement. Hailing from Namalata Village in Kadavu, his career began at a grassroots level through Kaji Rugby at only nine years old. His talent propelled him to Nasinu Secondary School, where he participated in the esteemed Deans competition.

Last year, Nuku was part of the Marist Brothers High School Under-18 team that reached the quarterfinals, paving the way for his selection to the national youth team. As he competes in New Zealand and the broader Oceania region, Nuku is determined to pursue further opportunities in rugby. “If I get a chance, I want to play for the Drua and also go overseas to learn and grow as a player,” he stated.

Nuku is optimistic about the future of Fijian rugby, especially with fellow players like Ratu Aporosa Lalabalavu and Marist’s first-five Asi Tuilagi, who are also showcasing their talents in the U18 competition. Their collective potential suggests a bright future for the next generation of rugby athletes in Fiji.

Building on similar narratives in Fijian rugby, such as Mesake Vocevoce’s journey with the Flying Fijians and other emerging talents like Mosese Naura, Nuku’s story reflects the dedication and resilience of young players in the sport. Their paths serve as a testament to the hard work and family support vital for success in rugby, inspiring a new cohort of aspiring athletes to pursue their dreams.

With continued commitment and growth, there’s boundless optimism for what these young talents can achieve on the international stage, reinforcing the strong rugby culture that exists in Fiji.
