Asilika Rinieta Qalo is poised to represent the Fiji Airways Fiji women’s 7s team in an exciting opportunity as she prepares to embark on her national duties. The 22-year-old athlete hails from Nadogo, Saqani, and has maternal roots in Nakobo, Cakaudrove. Alongside other uncapped players, Qalo is aiming for a spot in the squad for the upcoming Dubai 7s tournament next weekend.

Starting her rugby journey just two years ago with the Police rugby team and later joining Nasinu, Qalo expressed her gratitude for her selection to the Fijiana 7s squad. “Donning the national colours has always been a dream but it has not been an easy journey,” she stated, reflecting on the challenges she faced to reach this point.

Balancing the demanding training regimen required at a high-performance level, coupled with early morning sessions, has been tough. However, she credits her support system for motivating her to remain dedicated. “A lot of people have motivated and advised me to humble myself,” Qalo noted, demonstrating her commitment to personal growth and preparation.

Qalo is a former student of Nabua Secondary School and also engages in club netball, showing her versatility in sports. The Fijiana 7s team is set to depart for Dubai this weekend, where they will compete in Pool A alongside formidable teams such as Australia, Ireland, and China.

This news highlights not just the athletic journey of Qalo, but also the emerging talent within Fiji’s sports scene, offering hope for future accomplishments at international levels. The challenges she overcame serve as an inspiration to young athletes, reminding them that dedication and resilience can lead to incredible opportunities.
