Asilika Rinieta Qalo is poised to represent the Fiji Airways Fiji women’s 7s team, bringing her passion for rugby to the national stage. At just 22 years old, Qalo hails from Nadogo, Saqani, and has maternal ties to Nakobo in Cakaudrove. She is among several uncapped players fighting for a place in the lineup for the upcoming Dubai 7s tournament next weekend.
Reflecting on her journey, Qalo shared the challenges she faced in making it to the national extended squad. She only took up rugby two years ago, initially playing with the Police rugby team before moving to Nasinu. Expressing her gratitude, she stated, “I thank God for this Fijiana 7s selection. Donning the national colours has always been a dream but it has not been an easy journey.”
Despite the demanding training schedule and early mornings, Qalo emphasizes the importance of her support system, which has been pivotal in her motivation to persevere. “A lot of people have motivated and advised me to humble myself,” she noted. Unexpectedly chosen for the squad, she now feels prepared for the responsibilities that come with national duties.
Qalo, a Nabua Secondary School alumna, also engages in club netball, showcasing her versatility in sports. The Fijiana 7s team will depart this weekend for Dubai, where they will compete in Pool A alongside formidable teams including Australia, Ireland, and China.
This upcoming event not only highlights Qalo’s personal achievement but also the growing opportunities for young athletes in Fiji’s rugby scene. It serves as an inspiring reminder that dedication and hard work can lead to remarkable accomplishments, encouraging more aspiring players to pursue their dreams in sports.
In summary, Asilika Rinieta Qalo is a rising star in Fijian rugby, making her debut on the international stage as part of the national women’s 7s team, with a hopeful journey ahead at the Dubai 7s tournament.
