Asilika Rinieta Qalo is poised to represent the Fiji Airways Fiji women’s 7s team on the national stage. At just 22 years old and hailing from Nadogo, Saqani, with maternal ties to Nakobo in Cakaudrove, Qalo is among a group of uncapped players eager to secure a spot in the upcoming Dubai 7s tournament next weekend.
Qalo reflects on her journey to the national extended squad, noting that it has been a challenging road. She began playing rugby only two years ago, initially with the Police rugby team before moving to Nasinu. “I thank God for this Fijiana 7s selection,” she expressed, highlighting that wearing the national colors has always been a aspiration despite the obstacles she faced along the way.
The rigorous demands of daily training in a high-performance setting, along with early morning sessions, presented difficulties, yet Qalo attributes her perseverance to her supportive network. “A lot of people have motivated and advised me to humble myself,” she shared, admitting that she did not anticipate receiving a call to the squad but feels prepared for national duties.
Qalo’s background includes attending Nabua Secondary School and participating in club netball, showcasing her diverse athletic abilities.
Looking ahead, the Fijiana 7s team is set to depart this weekend for Dubai, where they will compete in Pool A against formidable opponents including Australia, Ireland, and China.
This promising chapter for Qalo represents not just her individual triumph but also demonstrates the potential for growth in women’s rugby in Fiji. Her journey is an inspiration for many young athletes who dare to pursue their dreams against the odds.
