Asilika Rinieta Qalo is poised to represent the national team as a member of the Fiji Airways Fiji women’s 7s rugby squad. The 22-year-old, hailing from Nadogo, Saqani with maternal ties to Nakobo in Cakaudrove, is one of the new players looking to secure her spot for the upcoming Dubai 7s tournament next weekend.
Reflecting on her selection, Qalo emphasized the challenges she faced throughout her journey to the national extended squad. She began her rugby career just two years ago, initially playing for the Police rugby team before transitioning to Nasinu.
“I thank God for this Fijiana 7s selection,” Qalo expressed. Achieving her dream of donning the national colors has required significant dedication. Adhering to daily training schedules in a high-performance environment, which includes early morning sessions, has been a demanding endeavor. Fortunately, she credits her support system for motivating her to stay committed.
“A lot of people have motivated and advised me to humble myself,” she noted. Although she did not expect to receive the call-up to the team, she is fully prepared for her national responsibilities.
In addition to rugby, Qalo is a Nabua Secondary School alumnus and is also active in club netball.
The Fiji women’s sevens team will be departing this weekend for Dubai, where they will compete in Pool A against formidable opponents Australia, Ireland, and China.
This journey not only reflects Qalo’s personal achievements but also showcases the growth of women’s rugby in Fiji, highlighting the opportunities for young athletes to pursue their dreams on international platforms. With her determination and support, Qalo’s story is a testament to resilience and ambition, potentially inspiring countless others to follow in her footsteps.
