Asilika Rinieta Qalo is poised to represent the Fiji Airways Fiji women’s 7s rugby team, marking a significant milestone in her budding career. The 22-year-old athlete, hailing from Nadogo, Saqani, with maternal ties to Nakobo in Cakaudrove, is one of the new players striving for a spot in the upcoming Dubai 7s tournament.
Qalo’s path to the national team has been a challenging one. She only began playing rugby two years ago with the Police rugby team before joining Nasinu. “I thank God for this Fijiana 7s selection,” she expressed, acknowledging that wearing the national colors has been a long-held dream. However, the journey hasn’t been straightforward. Adapting to rigorous training schedules and early morning sessions in a high-performance environment tested her resilience, yet her support system has played a crucial role in her motivation.
“A lot of people have motivated and advised me to humble myself,” Qalo noted, emphasizing her surprise at being selected. now that the opportunity has presented itself, she feels prepared for national duties.
Qalo is an alumna of Nabua Secondary School and is also active in club netball. The Fijiana 7s team is set to depart this weekend for Dubai, where they will compete in Pool A against formidable opponents, including Australia, Ireland, and China.
