Asilika Rinieta Qalo is poised to represent the Fiji Airways Fiji women’s 7s team in her upcoming debut. The 22-year-old, hailing from Nadogo, Saqani, and with maternal connections to Nakobo in Cakaudrove, is among the new faces on the squad preparing for the Dubai 7s tournament next weekend.

Reflecting on her journey, Qalo revealed that earning a spot in the national extended squad was a significant challenge. She began her rugby career just two years ago with the Police rugby team before moving to Nasinu. “I thank God for this Fijiana 7s selection,” she expressed. “Wearing the national colors has always been my dream, but the road here has not been easy.”

The demanding training regimen and early mornings took their toll, yet Qalo emphasized the importance of her support system, which has provided her with motivation to persevere. “Many have encouraged me to remain humble,” she noted. Although she did not anticipate being called up to the squad, she expressed her readiness to fulfill her national duties.

Qalo is a graduate of Nabua Secondary School and also participates in club netball. The Fijiana 7s team is scheduled to depart for Dubai this weekend, where they will face tough competition in Pool A against Australia, Ireland, and China.

This story highlights the determination and growth of young athletes like Qalo, showcasing how dedication and a supportive community can help individuals achieve their dreams against the odds. As the Fijiana 7s team embarks on this journey, it serves as an inspiration for many aspiring sportswomen in Fiji and beyond, demonstrating that hard work and perseverance can lead to exciting opportunities.
