Fifteen-year-old Asena Isalei from Wainibuka Secondary School is determined to secure a gold medal at this year’s Fiji Finals. Isalei made her mark during the intermediate girls’ 400m event at the Tailevu Zone Athletics Competition held at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, showcasing her exceptional talent.
After claiming a silver medal in the junior girls’ 400m event at last year’s Fiji Finals, Isalei has set her sights higher this year. She is not only competing in the 400m finals but also in the 200m heats scheduled for the second day of the Tailevu Zone events.
Isalei has been rigorously training for months, starting her days early at 4 am with the help of her father. “My training starts early in the morning, so I always try to go to bed early,” she shared, detailing her commitment to improvement, which includes hill runs around her local area.
This dedication reflects a broader trend among young athletes in Fiji, as highlighted by other rising talents like Tanesa Areki, who has been preparing thoroughly for her events with lofty aspirations to break records. The Fiji Finals, taking place from April 24 to 26, not only offers a platform for aspiring champions like Isalei but also fosters a spirit of camaraderie and perseverance among the athletes.
As anticipation builds for the upcoming finals, the electric atmosphere of competition serves to inspire young athletes across the nation. With her hard work and determination, Isalei’s journey resonates with the hopeful spirit of many, as they strive for excellence in track and field. The support and encouragement from their communities further cultivates resilience and ambition among Fiji’s youth.
