Adi Tulia Nacola, a dynamic young iTaukei entrepreneur, epitomizes the rising presence of women in the business sector. Known for her versatility, she has transitioned from furniture and boat building to film production with impressive success.

Nacola has recently written, produced, and directed her inaugural short film, titled “Bubu Belo,” in collaboration with the Fiji-based film company Bure Productions. The 25-minute film, performed in the iTaukei language, centers on the lives of its main characters, Bubu and Tamara, who reside in a quaint wooden cottage by the sea. Set in Verevere Village, Ra, the narrative showcases Bubu as she educates Tamara on sustainable living through fishing and agriculture, promoting values of independence and reverence for nature.

The plot takes an intriguing turn when an unexpected visitor from Bubu’s past arrives, presenting her with a challenging choice that highlights the tension between traditional reliance on the land and the allure of urban life—a challenge faced by many indigenous communities over time.

Nacola emphasizes the significance of finding opportunities both in urban centers and within one’s own community, advocating for maintaining a connection with one’s roots. She passionately supports storytelling as a vital method for sharing traditional wisdom across generations. “Bubu Belo” aims to strengthen ties between elders and youth, emphasizing the critical role of storytelling in honoring cultural heritage and fostering mutual respect.

The premiere of “Bubu Belo” will take place at Film Fiji’s office in Suva. Following the premiere, the film will be shown in various villages and communities in Ra, supported by Film Fiji. These screenings are intended to showcase the meaningful narrative of Bubu and Tamara, encouraging viewers to appreciate their cultural identity and sense of belonging as they navigate toward a promising future.
