Rising Rugby Star Maleli Nauvasi Joins Fijian Drua Development Program

Maleli Nauvasi, a talented young rugby player, has been chosen to join the Fijian Drua development program. His impressive performance in the Vodafone Deans competition, where he played a key role in leading Queen Victoria School to victory in the under-18 final, caught the eye of Drua selectors. Nauvasi’s exceptional showing in the final against Nasinu Secondary School earned him the Player of the Match title.

His abilities were further highlighted during his time with the Fiji Schoolboys U18 team, where he helped secure two wins against the Australia Schoolboys U18. Nauvasi’s flexibility on the field, having played various positions including flyhalf, wing, and fullback, reflects his versatility and talent.

Nauvasi expressed his excitement about joining the Drua Development program, sharing his eagerness to be part of the team and his appreciation for the opportunity. Ifereimi Rawaqa, the development and skills coach for Fijian Drua, commended Nauvasi for his natural talent, discipline, and outstanding performances, expressing confidence in his potential success in the professional arena. Rawaqa stated, “I’m delighted to welcome Maleli Nauvasi to our Drua development program; he has shown exceptional promise, not only with his natural talent but also with his discipline on the field.”

Baden Stephenson, the general manager of Fijian Drua, highlighted the significance of Nauvasi’s signing, especially considering the interest he received from foreign clubs. Nauvasi’s choice to remain with the Drua underscores his dedication to the club and his ambition to advance from the U18 ranks to the Flying Fijians.

He joins 10 other promising young players in the Drua development squad, which offers a salary, training with the Super Rugby Pacific team, and the chance to compete in provincial tournaments such as the Skipper Cup alongside Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific. The program aims to equip these players with the resources, coaching, and environment necessary to transition to a professional level and make a meaningful impact in the future.
