Rising HIV Cases: Why the iTaukei Population Leads the Statistics

Eighty-nine percent of all HIV-positive tests recorded between January and June of this year have been linked to the iTaukei population, according to Dr. Rachel Devi, head of family health for the Ministry of Health. This concerning trend accompanies a staggering 547 percent increase in HIV cases over the past five years.

Dr. Devi pointed out that the high proportion of positive tests among the iTaukei may be influenced by various factors. She questioned the reasons behind the significant number, suggesting that increased testing among the iTaukei population, coupled with lower testing rates among Fijians of Indian descent, could be factors at play.

She stressed the importance of analyzing these statistics in light of Fiji’s demographic composition, emphasizing the need for a careful assessment of the proportions of different ethnic groups relative to the entire population.

Dr. Devi noted that greater awareness and a willingness to get tested have led to the detection of more cases. Many individuals are acknowledging risky behaviors or having partners who are HIV positive.

She urged everyone to be proactive about their health, reinforcing that HIV affects individuals regardless of race, religion, or age. Dr. Devi highlighted that misconceptions surrounding HIV, which suggest it only affects specific groups, contribute to stigma and may deter others from seeking testing and treatment.

The Ministry of Health is dedicated to addressing these disparities through improved education and outreach initiatives.
