Rising HIV Cases Among Men: What’s Behind the Shift in Fiji?

Recent statistics from Fiji’s Ministry of Health indicate a rising number of HIV diagnoses among men. Dr. Rachel Devi, the head of family health at the Ministry, noted that this trend has prompted health officials to investigate the underlying reasons for the increased disparity.

Historically, the ratio of HIV diagnoses between men and women in Fiji was roughly equal, with nearly 50% for each gender prior to the past three years. However, current figures show that nearly 70% of diagnoses are now among men, raising concerns about possible changes in behaviors and testing patterns.

Dr. Devi suggested that one possible explanation could be the presence of more bisexual men or an increase in men who engage in sexual activities with other men. She emphasized that there might be changes occurring within that demographic, or it could be that more men are opting to get tested.

In contrast, the ongoing regular testing of women, particularly during pregnancy, has resulted in a consistent number of diagnoses among females. Dr. Devi mentioned that around 20,000 women receive HIV tests annually as a routine part of antenatal care, which helps maintain stable rates of diagnoses among women.

The Ministry recognizes the importance of additional research to better understand this shift in gender distribution. Dr. Devi expressed concerns about the implications of this trend, underscoring the need for further investigation and advocacy in this area.
