Rising from Resilience: One Graduate’s Journey of Triumph and Gratitude

Aleksio Rabaka has achieved a significant academic milestone by graduating with a Master’s Degree in Environmental Science from the University of the South Pacific. At just 27 years old, Rabaka attributes this achievement to his mother, Keresi Suiniika, who single-handedly raised him and his siblings, making numerous sacrifices to prioritize their education.

In a moving reflection on his journey, Rabaka spoke about the challenges he faced, including financial hardships and the responsibility of assisting his mother in supporting their family. He emphasized his mother’s unwavering strength in shielding him from societal stigma while encouraging him to pursue his dreams. “Yes, well, as I had just mentioned, we were raised by Mum for a while there, being a single-parent family. She, I would say, is the very reason I am here,” he shared, underscoring the deep gratitude he feels towards her.

Rabaka’s mother, overwhelmed with pride, described her son’s determination as “truly remarkable,” recognizing the sacrifices they both made in their pursuit of a better life. She highlighted that despite their modest circumstances, Rabaka never complained and always worked hard to achieve his goals.

Inspired by their story, Rabaka urges students to maintain focus on their aspirations, regardless of the obstacles they may encounter. His narrative echoes similar success stories from other graduates of the University of the South Pacific, such as Lafaele Tominiko, who also highlighted the importance of familial support amid personal hardships. Tominiko mirrored Rabaka’s message of perseverance, encouraging other students to keep going and remember their reasons for starting their educational journeys.
