Rising Fiji star Zech set for breakout at U17 Oceania Cup in Apia

Ratu Zechariah Tuivanuavou, a rising star in basketball, is poised to lead Fiji in the upcoming 2025 FIBA U17 Oceania Cup, which will take place in Apia next week. At just 16 years old, this guard, affectionately known as Zech, is not only determined to make an impact on the court but is also motivated by a family legacy that has fueled his passion for the game.

Zech credits much of his inspiration to his older brother, Ratu Gabriel, with whom he has battled countless times in their backyard. “Seeing my brother get better inspired me to push myself. Playing against him now, I try not to fall for his tricks. I’ve learned to spot the gaps and react quicker,” he explains. With encouraging words about his brother’s skills in passing and decision-making, Zech aims to absorb as much knowledge as possible as he steps into this competitive arena.

The Fiji team enters the U17 Oceania Cup with a refreshing sense of belief and preparation, intent on establishing itself among the elite basketball nations of the region. The roster, which blends local talent with overseas-based players, is targeting a top-four finish in Samoa, indicating a commitment to long-term growth rather than merely immediate results.

William Peter, the head coach of the Fiji men’s team, emphasizes that the selection of the squad was guided by a vision for future development. He acknowledges the formidable competition posed by teams like Australia and Guam but remains hopeful, stating, “Our aim is a top-four finish, and if we can achieve that, it would be a big bonus for us.” The focus is not only on raw talent; the coach has prioritized qualities such as coachability and accountability among players, fostering an environment where personal growth is a collective effort.

For many on the team, including Zech, this marks their inaugural experience donning the Fiji colors on the international stage. He expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity, noting, “It’s a good experience for my teammates and me. For some of us, it’s our first time representing Fiji, so it’s a chance to learn from every team and grow.”

Despite facing challenges related to venue access and funding during their preparations, the team has remained focused and motivated, largely due to the support from the local basketball community. Zech expressed gratitude to local schools like Yat Sen and Marist Brothers High School for providing training facilities.

The 2025 FIBA U17 Oceania Cup signifies more than just competition for Team Fiji; it represents a crucial step towards nurturing a new generation of basketball talent and establishing a sustainable pathway for high-performance sports within the country. The tournament, co-hosted by the Samoa National Basketball Association, runs from the 8th to the 13th of this month, with the top two teams earning a spot at the 2026 FIBA U18 Asia Cups. As Fiji embarks on this exciting journey, there is a palpable sense of hope and opportunity among players and supporters alike.
