Rising star Isikeli Rabitu of Swire Shipping Fijian Drua is set to face one of the most significant challenges of his Super Rugby career as he prepares to go up against Hurricanes co-captain and All Blacks inside centre, Jordie Barrett. Barrett, a seasoned player with a century of appearances for the Hurricanes and a notable vice-captain for the All Blacks, has consistently demonstrated his abilities at both the Super Rugby and international levels.

During a sabbatical with Leinster last year, Barrett made substantial contributions to the English Premiership, and his current form continues to elevate the Hurricanes’ performance. In their recent match against Moana Pasifika, Barrett’s influence was evident as he spearheaded the team’s attacking strategy, earning accolades for his playmaking skills. Despite not securing the man-of-the-match title, he was prominently featured in the Super Rugby Team of the Week by several New Zealand media outlets.

With key player Virimi Vakatawa absent from the Drua’s lineup, Rabitu, a 21-year-old emerging talent, is entrusted with the critical task of containing Barrett, who is currently enjoying a stellar phase in his career. Having garnered praise from head coach Glen Jackson as one of Fiji’s most promising backs, Rabitu aims to build on his impressive performance from last week against the Waratahs, where he was recognized as his team’s Player of the Match despite the 13-26 defeat.

His first professional start at inside centre showcased his creativity and composure, as he successfully penetrated the Waratahs’ defense multiple times. Rabitu’s defensive skills also shone through as he partnered effectively with fly-half Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula, even though the team struggled with set-piece execution.

To effectively counter Barrett’s impact, Rabitu and the Drua must concentrate on three pivotal strategies. First, they need to neutralize Barrett’s dual role as a powerful ball carrier and a second playmaker by maintaining discipline in their defensive lines to minimize his passing and playmaking opportunities. Second, Rabitu should employ low “chop” tackles targeting Barrett’s core and legs, as tackling him high could result in power mismatches. Lastly, they must pressure Barrett’s kicking game, forcing him into difficult situations and preventing him from leveraging his accurate long-range goal-kicking skills.

This matchup poses a rigorous test for Rabitu as he aims to rise to the occasion against one of rugby’s most formidable midfield players. Supporters can look forward to a gripping midfield battle that could significantly influence the match’s outcome, showcasing the potential and resilience of both players as they aim to shine on the Super Rugby stage. The anticipation surrounding this encounter highlights the exciting possibilities and promising future of rugby in the region.
