The prevalence of drug trade among low-income earners is on the rise, according to Livai Driu, an ACP operations officer. He noted that 2024 has recorded the highest number of drug-related cases, primarily due to increased involvement in drug cultivation.
Driu emphasized that the surge is not limited to known hotspots. Areas such as Rakiraki, and groups like the Lau and Lomaiviti, have emerged as new locations for drug activity. This trend indicates that drug cultivation is spreading into unexpected regions.
Fiji’s law enforcement is actively responding to these challenges, with dedicated teams focused on information sharing and monitoring key areas. Driu reported that many of the individuals arrested are children from informal settlements in Suva, like Nanuku and Jittu estate.
He also highlighted a concerning trend where the drug trade is increasingly targeting students, especially at the University of the South Pacific (USP) and the Fiji National University (FNU). As a response, law enforcement is intensifying their efforts around these educational institutions.
