Rising Drug Problem: Are Our Schools at Risk?

Police have confirmed that three students from a well-known school in Tailevu were questioned for allegedly using drugs on school grounds, raising significant concerns. This growing issue of drug use among students appears to be escalating and warrants attention.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Livai Driu verified that the students were brought in for questioning by teachers, who subsequently took them to a local police station a few weeks after the incident. Parents were also notified regarding the situation.

A concerned parent from the same school has urged the government to investigate what seems to be becoming a troubling trend within the educational system, highlighting the risk of becoming desensitized to drug use among students.

There is a pressing need to address the emergence of hard drugs in schools, where students are reportedly experimenting, using, and even arranging deliveries of these substances on campus. The revelation that students were found under the influence of methamphetamine within school premises is alarming.

Parents have reported witnessing unusual behaviors, such as students dancing in dormitories, which raises questions about the supervision by teachers and the potential for illegal drugs to be brought into the school. Some parents noted that cars have been seen frequently entering and exiting the school grounds.

In light of these alarming developments, it’s worth recalling a statement from the Pacific Recycling Foundation, which revealed the presence of needles and syringes in schools where they run recycling programs back in August, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

The challenges surrounding drug access, awareness among students, and the reporting mechanisms in place must be critically evaluated. The risk of desensitization to drug use is a major concern that needs to be addressed immediately.

There should be a concerted effort to create awareness about the detrimental effects of hard drugs on physical and mental health, as well as issues related to addiction. This isn’t merely an isolated incident; it reflects a broader emerging trend within the school system that necessitates urgent action from parents, educators, and authorities alike.

This issue extends beyond the confines of the school environment; it poses a societal problem that requires collective attention and intervention.
