In September, the Fiji Police Force recorded a total of 118 serious sexual offences. Acting Police Commissioner Sakeo Raikaci noted that the most frequently reported crime was rape, followed by indecent assault, sexual assault, and abduction of individuals under 18 years. Other notable offences included attempts to commit rape and defilement.
Raikaci also revealed that six police officers faced charges related to serious offences, including abuse of office, assault causing actual bodily harm, and obtaining financial advantage by deception. Additionally, he highlighted that police officers themselves were victims of crime in the course of their duties, with 171 officers reporting a total of 219 incidents, which included serious assaults and obstructions.
In September, law enforcement charged 838 individuals for various offences, comprising 48 juveniles. The majority of offenders fell within the age brackets of 18-35 years (486), 36-55 years (266), and those aged 56 and over (38).
Raikaci urged communities to collaborate with the Fiji Police Force in combating crime. He expressed concern over the involvement of juveniles in criminal activities, which could adversely affect their education and future. The Acting Commissioner called for support from families and communities in guiding the youth.
He also announced that the Fiji Police Force would intensify its operations in anticipation of the festive season and emphasized the importance of adhering to the rule of law to ensure safer communities for everyone.
