In September, the Fiji Police Force recorded 118 serious sexual offences. The Acting Commissioner of Police, Sakeo Raikaci, noted that rape was the most prevalent crime, followed by indecent assault, sexual assault, abduction of minors, attempted rape, defilement, and assault with intent to commit rape.
Raikaci also reported that six officers faced charges for serious misconduct, which included abuse of office, assault resulting in bodily harm, fraud, unlawful possession of drugs, and wrongful confinement. Additionally, he revealed that police personnel themselves were victims, with 171 officers reporting 219 incidents of crime while on duty. Among these, 33 cases involved multiple counts, including serious assaults and obstruction of police work.
During September, a total of 838 individuals were charged with various offenses, including 48 juveniles. The age breakdown showed that 486 offenders were between 18 and 35 years, 266 were aged 36 to 55, and 38 were over 56 years old.
Raikaci urged communities to collaborate with the Fiji Police Force to combat crime. He expressed concern over the involvement of juveniles in criminal activities, emphasizing that it affects their education and future. He called for support from families and communities in mentoring children.
As the festive season approaches, the Acting Commissioner announced that the Fiji Police Force will enhance its operations and encouraged everyone to respect the law for the safety of all communities.
