“Rising Costs and Education Crisis: Can Fijian Universities Afford Fee Hikes?”

Ketan Lal, the Shadow Minister for Justice, has expressed strong concerns regarding the potential increase in university fees amidst the ongoing cost of living crisis affecting Fijian families. He emphasized that while periodic fee reviews are customary, now is not an appropriate time for such adjustments given the current financial strain on households struggling with rising prices and economic instability.

Lal acknowledged the existence of the Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Scheme (TSLS) aimed at supporting students, but pointed out that many students may still opt for private education due to the stringent bond conditions set by the Government. He cautioned that any increase in university fees could add significant financial pressure on these students.

Raising broader concerns about the government’s approach to education, Lal challenged Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s declaration of 2025 as a “special year,” insisting that such proclamations must be backed by real actions that address the pressing challenges faced by families and students alike.

He urged universities to pause any fee hikes and for the government to take proactive steps to ensure that education remains accessible for everyone. Lal concluded his statements by emphasizing that effective leadership should focus on improving the lives of citizens rather than delivering empty promises, underscoring the need for urgent action to support the nation’s future.

This call for compassion and accessibility highlights the importance of prioritizing education during challenging economic times. By advocating for a halt to fee increases, Lal is championing the rights of students and their families, fostering a vision of a more equitable educational landscape.

In a time when many families face economic hardship, it is encouraging to see political figures raise awareness of these issues and call for meaningful actions that could benefit future generations.
