More Indo-Fijian girls are reportedly using marijuana while attending school, according to Alice Fong, a Divisional Counsellor from the Ministry of Education. Fong made this statement during her speech at the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji Women’s Conference held in Lautoka on Saturday.
She emphasized the importance of open conversations with children about drug use, stating, “Don’t assume that because 95 percent of women here are of Indian descent, your Indian daughter would never engage in drug use.” Fong shared her experiences in schools where she has encountered Indian girls using marijuana.
She urged parents to communicate openly with their children, suggesting that discussions about drug use do not necessarily lead to experimentation. “Who else will inform them? That’s why I encourage you to stay informed, research current statistics, and understand what is happening in the country,” she advised.
