The Ministry of Education has raised alarms over an increasing number of girls found in possession of illegal drugs or reported to be under the influence at school. This year, approximately 10 girls from a notable high school were directed to the ministry for such incidents, highlighting a concerning trend within the Central Division. Vilisimani Rakikau, the ministry’s Substance Abuse, Alcohol and Other Drugs Counsellor, emphasized that although drug use is often associated with boys, the rising cases among girls are undeniable.
In response to these issues, the ministry takes immediate action by directing severe cases to the police and providing counseling for the affected students. Head of Schools are encouraged to report any incidents quickly, allowing for a prompt response from authorities.
While specific statistics were not disclosed, Rakikau characterized the situation as alarming, noting that it signifies a substantial national issue. Even though the number of juvenile offenders from 2019 to 2023 remained relatively low—peaking at 1,004 in 2020—the growing trend among school-aged children is troubling.
Additionally, there have been reports of primary school students serving as “runners” for drug deliveries. A troubling incident last year involved a year two student unknowingly delivering drugs packed in their lunchbox, illustrating the potential dangers children face.
As the festive season approaches, both Rakikau and Senior Superintendent Salanieta Radaniva of the Fiji Police Force are urging parents and guardians to be vigilant about their children’s whereabouts. They stress the importance of staying informed about children’s activities for their safety.
This concerning situation reflects a need for community awareness and stronger support systems. Engaging parents, schools, and law enforcement in preventative measures could foster a safer environment for children. Moreover, it presents an opportunity for society to work together to mitigate drug-related issues and promote healthier choices among the youth.
