Rising Concern: Indo-Fijian Girls Turning to Marijuana in Schools

More Indo-Fijian girls are reportedly using marijuana while in school, according to Alice Fong, Divisional Counsellor for the Ministry of Education in the West. She made this statement during the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji Women’s Conference held in Lautoka on Saturday.

“Don’t assume that just because 95 percent of the women here are Indian, my Indian daughter would never do drugs,” Ms. Fong stated. “I have visited schools and encountered Indian girls who are using marijuana.”

She emphasized the importance of parents having open discussions with their children about these issues, urging them not to fear that talking about drugs would encourage their kids to use them. “Who else will inform them?” she asked, encouraging parents to stay informed through research and to keep up-to-date with the current statistics and developments occurring across the country.
