Alice Fong, a Divisional Counsellor from the Ministry of Education in the Western Division, has reported an alarming trend of increasing marijuana use among Indo-Fijian girls in schools. Speaking at the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji Women’s Conference in Lautoka, she emphasized that this issue should not be underestimated due to the predominant Indian demographic in the region.
Fong urged parents to engage in open discussions with their children about drugs, expressing that misconceptions may lead to complacency. She shared her personal experiences visiting schools and encountering Indian girls who are involved in marijuana use.
“Don’t think that just because 95 percent of the women here are Indians, your Indian daughter is exempt from drug use,” Fong stated. She encouraged parents to proactively seek information about the current state of drug use in the country by researching online and staying informed.
