Rising Concern: Alcohol’s Role in Violence on Koro Island

Residents of two districts on Koro Island are expressing concerns over the illegal sale and consumption of alcohol, linking it to a rise in violence against women and children. Tevita Vunileba, chairman of the island’s crime prevention committee, noted that the social challenges on Koro Island have intensified due to excessive alcohol use.

“We are cautious about the increasing incidents of violence towards our women and children, which are fueled by heavy drinking,” Vunileba remarked. He clarified that while the committee does not advocate for a complete ban on alcohol, there should be regulations to limit its use.

He highlighted that the issue is compounded by the influx of alcohol from the mainland and some local sources. Offenders have been warned, and the committee plans to investigate the families of those involved in the illegal trade.

Additionally, Vunileba pointed out that marijuana use contributes to physical abuse, with the committee receiving reports from concerned villagers. “It’s encouraging that community members are voicing their concerns. This is a serious problem; drinking begins on Sundays and sometimes continues into the week, undermining the traditional respect for that day,” he said.

Justice Minister Siromi Turaga emphasized that the excessive consumption of alcohol should not be normalized and urged individuals to comply with the appropriate procedures for establishing businesses, while also considering village and district regulations.
