Shairana Ali, the CEO of Save the Children Fiji, has underscored the urgent need for enhanced protective measures, improved education for parents and caregivers, and greater support for children who are victims of abuse or at risk of it. During the recent observance of Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect Day, Ms. Ali referred to startling statistics from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), which reveal a troubling rise in child abuse and neglect cases.
In the year 2023 alone, the ODPP reported over 200 instances of child sexual abuse and over 300 cases of physical abuse or neglect. Ms. Ali emphasized that these figures do not merely represent statistics, but rather signify real children with their own individual stories and suffering. She called for action, stating, “We cannot afford to be passive bystanders in the face of this crisis.”
Save the Children Fiji is actively working to support families, raise community awareness, and advocate for stronger child protection legislation, driven by the belief that every child is entitled to a life free from harm and filled with hope.
