Cancer cases have shown a notable increase among both male and female patients in recent years. This concerning trend was addressed by CWM Consultant, Dr. Ane Veu, during the Pinktober celebrations held in Suva.

Dr. Veu emphasized that the Ministry of Health is actively working on enhancing treatment options and focusing on the early detection of cancer cells. Notably, she mentioned that breast cancer is not solely a female concern, as there have been reported cases among males as well. The Ministry is responding by providing screening and radiation therapy for these cases.

During the event, Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation, Lynda Tabuya, highlighted the importance of Pinktober as a time to celebrate the resilience of cancer survivors and to strategize for improved treatment for those still facing the disease. She acknowledged the real challenges that breast cancer patients and their caregivers endure daily.

Tabuya also pointed out the critical need for greater awareness regarding cancer treatment in rural communities. She expressed the intention to ensure that these communities, which may lack access to essential information, receive necessary resources through information sessions conducted by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Rural Development.

In a proactive step, the Ministry of Women has contributed $5,000 to the Fiji Cancer Society. This funding is intended to support various programs aimed at reducing the rising cancer rates in the Pacific region, which unfortunately remain one of the leading causes of mortality in Fiji.

In summary, concerted efforts are being made to improve cancer detection and treatment in Fiji, especially in rural areas where access to information and services is limited. The ongoing initiatives and increasing awareness during events like Pinktober shine a light on the significant impact that education and support can have on combating this serious health issue. With continued commitment from both governmental bodies and communities, there is hope for better outcomes for those affected by cancer.
