The Fiji Cancer Society has reported a disturbing increase in cancer cases among the iTaukei population this year, with 84 out of 140 new cases affecting iTaukei women, primarily due to breast cancer. Alumita Bera, a Palliative Care Officer at the society, emphasized that breast cancer is now the most prevalent form of cancer among women in Fiji, followed by cervical and colorectal cancers.

Historically, around 500 cancer cases are registered annually by the society, though this number does not include diagnoses from hospitals or private clinics, indicating that the actual figures may be significantly higher. The society is currently investigating the reasons behind this rise in cancer incidence within iTaukei communities, considering potential lifestyle factors as key contributors.

In light of these concerns, Bera is advocating for regular health screenings as cancer can often develop without early warning signs. This call for action resonates with increased public health efforts in Fiji, particularly after alarming statistics indicate a tripling of cancer cases recently. Doctors have highlighted the role of lifestyle factors, such as diet and exercise, in cancer prevention, urging residents to adopt healthier habits.

This situation draws parallels with previous reports that accentuated the need for greater awareness and proactive measures to combat rising cancer rates. Health professionals are hopeful that by addressing lifestyle choices and encouraging community education, it can lead to a healthier future for the population.

Continued efforts to boost awareness, alongside accessible health services, can empower communities and potentially reduce the impact of cancer in Fiji. This focus on preventive care and education presents a valuable opportunity to foster long-term health improvements across the nation.
