Rising Calls for Support: Fiji’s Children with Disabilities on the Increase

The Frank Hilton Organisation has reported a notable rise in the number of children needing support, with an annual increase of 25 percent in cases. CEO Sureni Perera highlighted that awareness months significantly contribute to identifying more cases, particularly for conditions such as cerebral palsy.

The organization focuses on aiding children with disabilities and developmental challenges in Fiji. Perera noted a positive trend: younger children, especially those aged zero to six, are now being referred to their services sooner than in previous years. Historically, many children were referred much later, often around the ages of 10 to 18. This early intervention is a strong indicator of growing awareness about the importance of timely support for developmental issues.

In response to the increased demand, the government has allocated $900,000 to the Frank Hilton Foundation this year. While Perera expresses gratitude for this funding, she emphasizes the necessity for additional resources to keep pace with the rising need for services. She acknowledged the government’s support amidst competing priorities but indicated a greater need for enhanced awareness of inclusion policies, mindsets, and attitudes toward disability.

The Frank Hilton Organisation remains committed to advocating for increased awareness and resources to better serve children with disabilities and developmental challenges across Fiji.

In summary, the encouraging shift toward earlier intervention for children with disabilities demonstrates a growing awareness in the community, and with continued advocacy and support, the organization can further enhance its services to meet the needs of these children effectively. This highlights a hopeful trajectory for the future support landscape in Fiji.
