In today’s world, stories of resilience and triumph often emerge from difficult circumstances, inspiring many along the way. A poignant example is that of Esther Lusiana Kuva, a talented 18-year-old who has turned her grief into a source of strength. As the head girl and dux recipient at Nakasi High School, Esther recently dedicated her achievements to her mother, who passed away from bone cancer last year, a loss that profoundly impacted her life.

Esther’s emotional reaction upon being named dux at her school highlighted the challenges she faced while juggling her academic responsibilities and her role as a leader. She expressed gratitude for the support of her family, including her aunt and uncle, who provided a home during tough times, as well as her grandmother, who played a vital role in their lives. “Although my mother isn’t here physically, I know she is here with me spiritually,” Esther remarked, demonstrating a deep connection to her mother’s memory.

Esther’s hard work and notable accomplishments were recognized at the school’s awards ceremony, where she received multiple accolades, including the Year 13 prize, a leadership award, and subject awards in English, Pure Mathematics, Biology, and Physics. She was even honored as the best science student and received the principal’s award, alongside her dux title for 2024.

Her family, particularly her 71-year-old grandmother Ana Qitialewa, celebrated her success with immense pride. Ms. Qitialewa praised her granddaughter’s discipline, noting her daily commute from Verata, Tailevu, and her commitment to balancing schoolwork and family obligations. “I know her mom would be so proud of her right now and what she has achieved,” Ms. Qitialewa shared emotionally.

Looking ahead, Esther is eager to pursue a career in the medical field, contemplating options between nursing and dental care as she prepares for the next chapter of her life. Her journey serves as a powerful reminder that with sacrifice, dedication, and faith, one can overcome adversity and achieve remarkable goals.

Esther’s story is not just a testament to personal hard work but a reflection of how love and support from family can create a solid foundation for success, even in the face of loss. Her narrative encourages others to find strength in their struggles and continue to strive for their dreams, honoring those who have supported them along the way.
