Rising Above: Ana Seru Shines as Top Female Cadet from Challenging Background

Ana Seru, a Year Nine student, has been recognized as the top female cadet during the John Wesley College passing-out parade held at Albert Park, Suva. This achievement is notable considering her upbringing in the challenging Raiwaqa area, known for its social issues.

Reflecting on her experience during the week-long cadet training, the 14-year-old described facing the tough and humid conditions while mastering marching techniques, which she found to be a substantial challenge. Despite the difficulties she encountered, Ana remained committed to her education, stating, “I knew my upbringing was not ideal, but I strived for excellence every time I stepped into the classroom.” She emphasized that education is the key to improving her life.

Originating from Naivucini in Naitasiri, Ana pointed out the importance of making wise decisions, particularly in the face of peer pressure—a lesson imparted by her family. She believes that making positive choices is crucial for achieving favorable outcomes.

Ana dedicated her accolade to her siblings and her father, who was present at the event. “I’m the introvert in the family, and I hope this award will inspire my younger siblings to believe that they can achieve anything if they set their minds to it,” she shared. Following her success, she noted that her younger siblings, currently in primary school, are eager to join secondary school and participate in cadet training, inspired by her achievements.
