Rise of a Determined Spirit: Monica’s Inspiring Journey

Spread the love

Monica Ting, a remarkable 22-year-old woman, exemplifies selflessness by continually prioritizing the needs of others over her own. Recently graduating from the University of the South Pacific, Monica’s journey reflects not only her personal growth but also the rewards of her dedicated studies.

Growing up in a large family with nine siblings, Monica’s parents have influenced her life significantly. Her father, a hardworking farmer, and her mother, a devoted housewife from Salia in Tunuloa, Cakaudrove, instilled a strong work ethic in their children. Raised in Labasa, Monica recalls spending holidays at the family farm in Savusavu, an experience that shaped her childhood.

Monica vividly remembers a deal her father made with his children when she was in class three: the sibling who topped their class would accompany him to Suva. That challenge sparked her motivation to excel academically. Monica graduated from St Johnston College in Cawaci, Ovalau, and initially aspired to pursue a career in teaching before wanting to become a doctor at the age of ten. After high school, she applied to both Fiji National University for a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery program and the University of the South Pacific for a Bachelor of Science program.

Although she faced challenges with her admission to FNU, Monica chose to attend USP, believing in a higher purpose for her journey. Starting university was akin to a rollercoaster ride, comforting her to reconnect with a few high school friends amid the changes. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, she adapted by taking her classes online from Vanuan Levu.

Tragedy struck when Monica lost her family home in a devastating fire, leaving her feeling lost and despondent. Thankfully, her cousin Dr. Maria Ting offered support during this difficult time, allowing Monica to focus on her studies. Through prayer and perseverance, she navigated this challenging chapter. The emotions surrounding her graduation were profound, mixed with joy and fulfillment, especially since she could celebrate with her brothers and sister-in-law, despite her parents’ absence.

Looking ahead, Monica envisions herself working in a laboratory or classroom within the next five years, while also fulfilling her travel ambitions. Her message to younger generations emphasizes the importance of prioritizing values and faith: “Every step you take every day is a decision made based on what or who you prioritize, but above all, prioritize God.”

Monica Ting’s story serves as an inspiring reminder of resilience, faith, and the importance of community support in the face of adversity. With her determination and positive outlook, she is certainly on a path to success and could influence others along the way.
