Following the recent magnitude 7.3 earthquake that struck Vanuatu’s capital, Port Vila, on December 17, 2023, there has been a concerning rise in violence against women, local police have reported. This natural disaster tragically claimed the lives of 14 people and left 265 others injured, prompting alarm about the increase in gender-based violence in the aftermath.
Inspector Kami Toa from the Vanuatu police stated that the family protection unit has dealt with nearly 50 assault cases, primarily involving women, as well as around 10 other incidents classified as gender-based violence since the earthquake occurred. This represents an estimated increase of more than two percent in reported cases of violence, with particularly alarming instances of attempted rape and indecent assault against young women rising.
Additionally, the economic impact of the earthquake has led to a spike in thefts, as many residents have lost their homes and jobs, struggling to afford basic necessities. Inspector Toa emphasized the desperation felt in communities, noting, “People are going around stealing other people’s property” due to widespread unemployment and the closure of local businesses.
The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) reported that approximately 1,473 individuals have been displaced, and around 80,000 people have been affected by the disaster, underscoring the urgent need for support and resources for vulnerable populations.
