Pravesh Sharma, the chairperson of the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC), has emphasized the importance of respecting the rights of the Grace Road Group (GRG). In a recent interview with The Lens@177, he raised concerns regarding the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations’ treatment of GRG.

The ministry has reported alleged “breaches” in GRG’s operations and has committed to sending officers to investigate their properties. Mr. Sharma expressed his belief that the ministry’s approach may have been inappropriate, stating that it seemed they did not allow Grace Road the chance to address the issues before making a public announcement.

He pointed out that the ministry should have first notified Grace Road about the alleged breaches and given them an opportunity to rectify the situation before taking such drastic public action. Mr. Sharma further questioned whether local employers are being treated with the same scrutiny as Grace Road, referencing challenges faced by migrant workers, including Bangladeshis, who have been left in vulnerable situations.

Grace Road has acknowledged employing 800 workers in Fiji and has expressed its willingness to work with the ministry to address any concerns raised publicly.

This situation highlights the delicate balance between regulatory oversight and the rights of businesses, suggesting that more open communication could foster better understanding and cooperation between employers and regulatory bodies. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by businesses in navigating compliance while also ensuring worker rights are maintained.

In a broader context, the involvement of oversight bodies like FHRADC shows a commitment to a fair and just approach to human rights, which is essential for fostering trust and collaboration in the workplace. It is hopeful that this situation can lead to improved practices and clearer communication in the future.
