Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto recently articulated the Indonesian government’s ambitions for food self-sufficiency and increased food crop production in a meeting with Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta. President Prabowo highlighted that national rice productivity has seen significant improvements over the past six months since he assumed office.
During the discussions, Prabowo expressed enthusiasm for Fiji’s potential involvement, suggesting that Fijian youth could benefit from learning Indonesian agricultural practices. He noted advancements in the agriculture sector, particularly regarding the development of higher-yielding seed varieties, including for soybeans and wheat. Currently, soybean yields in Indonesia are low at just 1-2 tons per hectare, but new seed types could enhance production beyond 2.5 tons per hectare, boosting competitiveness in the global market.
Furthermore, President Prabowo emphasized the importance of fostering bilateral relations, especially as Fiji ranks as Indonesia’s fourth-largest trade partner in Oceania. He invited Fijian students to pursue education in various fields in Indonesia, including engineering and vocational training, reaffirming a commitment to enhancing human resource capacities in both nations.
This meeting also served to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Fiji, marking a significant milestone. President Prabowo underscored the shared challenges both nations face as island countries and the mutual interests that bind them together. He expressed hope for ongoing cooperation that would strengthen the relationship between their peoples.
The collaboration between Indonesia and Fiji reflects a common goal of addressing regional challenges and promoting sustainable development. This partnership represents a promising opportunity for both nations to grow together, enhancing not only their agricultural capabilities but also cultural and educational exchanges that promote long-term friendship and prosperity in the Pacific region.
Such initiatives not only reinforce economic ties but also embody a spirit of unity and resilience, paving the way for a hopeful and collaborative future for both Indonesia and Fiji.
