Rice Farmers Get Assurance: Will Drainage Issues Finally Be Solved?

The Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Vatimi Rayalu, has committed to effectively resolving drainage issues faced by rice farmers in Dreketi, Macuata. He announced the appointment of a drainage board to tackle these problems and encouraged farmers in Vanua Levu to utilize this opportunity by visiting the drainage board office in Labasa.

Long-time farmer Ram Khewal, 75, expressed gratitude towards the government’s recent drainage efforts at Laqere, Tabia, Labasa, noting that more than 50 percent of the work has been completed. Additionally, he urged the government to construct a seawall at their site to safeguard rice farms from damage.

Khewal highlighted the significant impact of heavy rainfall, which annually destroys around 30 acres of rice fields, threatening the livelihoods of local farmers and food security. He mentioned that they have been requesting a seawall for at least four years, but there has been no action from the government or the Ministry of Waterways.

While Khewal plans to apply for the rice planting subsidy, he believes more initiatives are needed to boost rice production. He advocated for greater consultations and discussions, allowing farmers to engage with relevant authorities and share concerns and solutions regarding drainage issues.

Drainage improvement efforts are also underway in Soasoa, Labasa, which is prone to flooding during heavy rains.
