RFMF Seeks Forgiveness: A New Dawn for Fiji’s Military?

A new day dawned at the Sukanaivalu Barracks in Labasa as the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) officially sought forgiveness from the vanua of Caumatalevu. The Tui Labasa, Ratu Jone Qomate, accepted the apology on behalf of the vanua, which was related to the events surrounding the 2000 coup.

RFMF commander Brigadier-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai emphasized the significance of this reconciliation, stating that it was vital not only for the soldiers involved but also for their families and the broader community. He noted that the event in Vanua Levu was particularly important as it directly addressed the soldiers who participated in the takeover of the Sukanaivalu barracks.

Kalouniwai acknowledged that the soldiers recognized their wrongdoing, which he described as a significant admission. He mentioned their acceptance of having been imprisoned for five to six years due to their actions.

The brigadier-general also addressed the ongoing stigma surrounding the soldiers that impacted their reputation within the military and their own communities. He announced plans for further reconciliation events, including one in Suva with the Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit soldiers, and highlighted that the largest reconciliation ceremony would take place in November.
